The Carbon Mission

Good for the planet. Good for your pocket.

Less carbon. More life. A mission we all share.

The Carbon Mission is an open project to stop global warming. Everyone can join in to save our planet, and save money while doing it.

Neighbours share a seedling in a community garden, surrounded by homes with solar panels, a heat pump and a bicycle.

Three ways we help you save

To give everyone practical ways to reduce their carbon emissions and their bills, through interactive guides, advice on cutting the power their devices use, and buying guides.

  • A checklist on a clipboard with two steps ticked off and a gold star beside it.

    Interactive guides

Friendly step-by-step guides you can click through at your own pace. Pick a room or a habit, follow along, and tick off each win as you go.

  • A computer screen showing a power button, next to a meter with bars getting shorter.

    Cut your device power

TVs, consoles, chargers and computers keep sipping electricity. Learn the simple switches that trim what they use, and try the calculator to see your saving.

  • A fridge next to an energy rating chart, with the most efficient green bar ticked.

    Buying guides

Need a new fridge, washing machine, dishwasher or TV? Compare real models and see which costs less to run and is kinder to the planet for years to come.

    On the way

See what one switch-off saves

Pick any device at home, such as a TV, a games console or a heater. Tell us how much power it uses and how long you could switch it off for each day. We will show the money and the carbon you save in a year, side by side.

Where do you live?

Look for a number followed by a W (for watts, a measure of power) on the label on the back or on the plug.

watts
2 hours a day

Your saving, every year

Money saved
£19.21
a year off your bill
Carbon saved
10.5 kg
a year kept out of the air

Nice one! That is 73 kWh of electricity you no longer pay for. Every switch-off counts.

How we worked it out

Watts × hours a day × 365 days ÷ 1,000 gives the kWh (kilowatt-hours, the units on your bill) saved in a year. We multiply that by the price of one kWh for the money, and by the carbon released per kWh for the carbon.

  • Price: Ofgem, energy price cap for 1 October to 31 December 2026: 26.32p per kWh (paying by Direct Debit, average for England, Scotland and Wales).
  • Carbon: Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, greenhouse gas conversion factors 2026: 0.144 kg per kWh (0.131 for generating UK electricity plus 0.013 lost on the way to your home), counting carbon dioxide and the other greenhouse gases together.

These are averages, so your own saving may be a little different. Your bill shows the exact price you pay.

Find help where you live

Grants, energy labels and free advice are different in every country. Choose yours to find the public bodies that can help. They are independent of The Carbon Mission and do not endorse it.
